GENEALOGY AND ANCESTRY OF RUTHERFORD B. HAYES, 19TH PRESIDENT

Rutherford B. Hayes was our only President whose election was decided by a congressional commission. As President, he pulled federal troops out of the South, thereby ending Reconstruction after the Civil War. It was during his presidency that the White House Easter Egg Roll was initiated as a White House tradition. Rutherford B. Hayes was born on October 4, 1822 in Delaware, Ohio. His parents were Rutherford Hayes and Sophia Birchard. Tracing his family's genealogy back, Rutherford B. Hayes shares a common descent from Charlemagne and William "the Conqueror" as many other U.S. Presidents. On his father's side, his family was originally from Connecticut before moving to Ohio and before that was from Scotland and England. His great-great grandfather on his father's side, Captain Ezekial Hayes, fought in the Revolutionary War. On his mother's side, several of his ancestors migrated from England to Massachusetts and Connecticut in the 1600's.
