George Washington's father was Augustine Washington with his second wife, Mary Ball. Augustine Washington was prominent in Virginia politics and was owner of the first iron furnace in Virginia. Like his son George Washington, he was known for his height and strength. Augustine Washington's grandfather was John Washington, the first Washington to emigrate to Virginia from England. The Washington family was descended from Scot royal lineage going back to Duncan I, King of Scotland. Over the generations they financial wealth and political influence diminished, even though on several occasions they married into the English royal family.
