GENEALOGY AND ANCESTRY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN, 16TH PRESIDENT

Abraham Lincoln was our first President to be assassinated. He was President during the Civil War and is perhaps best remembered for his Emancipation Proclamation which freed the slaves in the states in rebellion. His Gettysburg Address is the most famous of all presidential speeches. In most polls of the best U.S. Presidents, he is ranked first or second along with George Washington. Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Sinking Spring, Hodegenville, Hardin County, Kentucky. His parents were Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks. Abraham Lincoln is descended from Robert Lincoln who died in Hingham, Norfolk, England in 1543. His ancestor, Samuel Lincoln, migrated to Massachusetts in the 1600's. Abraham Lincoln is also descended from Obadiah Holmes who migrated from Lancashire, England to Rhode Island in the 1600's. Little is known about the ancestry of his mother, Nancy Hanks.
