GENEALOGY AND ANCESTRY OF JOHN TYLER, 10TH PRESIDENT

John Tyler was the first Vice President to ascend to the presidency upon the death of the President. He did not make an inaugural speech and was never elected President. During the Civil War, he was elected to the Confederate Congress. He had the most children of any President. He also started the tradition of the playing of "Hail to the Chief" when the President enters a room. His plantation home was named Sherwood Forest. John Tyler was born on March 29, 1790 in Charles City County, Virginia. His parents were Virginia Governor John Tyler and Mary Marot Armistead. John Tyler shares a common descent from Anthony Savage with presidents James Madison and Zachary Taylor. Anthony Savage, in turn, was descended from Charlemagne, William "the Conqueror" and various other English kings. John Tyler also shares a common ancestry from William Strother with presidents Zachary Taylor and Jimmy Carter.
